Khanh Hoa responding to the 2024 World Meteorological Day: At the Frontline of Climate Action

Update: 25/03/2024
This year’s 2024 World Meteorological Day themed “At the Frontline of Climate Action” aims to create awareness about the significance of predicting weather changes and climate change mitigation.

Climate change is affecting the hydrological cycle and increasing the frequency and intensity of natural disasters, including storms, flash floods, landslides, etc. According to Tran Van Hung, Vice-Director of Southern & Central Regional Hydrometeorological Station, there are 6 basic hydrometeorological stations, 27 hydrometeorological stations with automatic rain gauges, 1 weather surveillance radar station and 1 lightning location station and real-time weather meteorological stations.

The station has continued promoting digital transformation, applying advanced forecasting models and software such as Smart Met, Marine, Mike21, CDH system (Center Data Hub) to weather forecasting to provide early warnings for the community.

In addition, hydrometeorological forecast bulletins have been improved with more details and warnings of natural disasters, including storms, tropical depressions, heavy rains, cold air and floods; with the focus on enhancing marine hydrometeorological forecasts, especially marine weather on the Spratly Archipelago, contributing to protecting the national marine sovereignty and effectively serving the province's marine economic development.

In the dry season of 2024, El Nino is likely to last until June and then gradually turn into LaNina in the last months. Accordingly, this year's dry season will have less rain and more intense heat than in 2023, and the river and stream levels is forecast to be 20-40% lower than the average in many years.

Therefore, Khanh Hoa is likely to face drought and water shortage in some regions. Localities are inspired to take action to save water and propagandize people not to use slash-and-burn techniques to order to prevent risks of wildfires during the peak months of the dry season.
